Itinerary
Day 1: Inca Trail Start – Llaqtapata – Huayllabamba
Your adventure begins with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and a scenic drive to the trailhead at Km 82, where the Classic Inca Trail officially starts. The first hiking day follows the Urubamba River, offering gentle terrain and beautiful valley views. Along the way, you will visit Llaqtapata, an important archaeological site that provides insight into Inca agricultural planning. After lunch surrounded by nature, the trek continues through gradually rising terrain until reaching the village of Huayllabamba, where camp is set for the night.
Day 2: Huayllabamba – Dead Woman’s Pass – Pacaymayo
This is the most physically demanding day of the trek. After breakfast, you will begin the ascent toward Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass), the highest point of the Inca Trail at 4,200 meters above sea level. The climb rewards hikers with dramatic mountain scenery and panoramic views of the Andes. After reaching the summit, the trail descends into the Pacaymayo Valley, where camp is established for the night, allowing time to rest and recover.
Day 3: Pacaymayo – Runkurakay – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna
The third day is considered the most scenic and culturally rich. The route climbs toward Runkurakay, followed by a descent to the impressive ruins of Sayacmarca, strategically positioned on a cliffside. The trail then leads through cloud forest ecosystems to Phuyupatamarca, known as the “Town Above the Clouds,” offering stunning views of the Urubamba Valley. The day ends at Wiñay Wayna, one of the most beautiful archaeological sites along the trail, where the final campsite is located.
Day 4: Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco
Before sunrise, you will depart for a short hike to Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where you will witness your first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu from above. After descending into the citadel, a guided tour introduces the history, architecture, and spiritual significance of this ancient sanctuary. Following the visit, you will travel to Aguas Calientes for free time before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo, with a private transfer continuing to Cusco.
